I'm not sure we 'always' try to be different. We are all different and the same. In part, it is our experiences that shape and determine who we are, how we see things and what we do. The other part(s) ... hmmm ... too many. Don't get me wrong, I do believe that there is a conscious decision at times to be different.

To be different is not a problem. The problem is not accepting the differences and make a very good use of it. Why do people/nations have to impose their own culture, beliefs, and rules on other cultures? I like your post very much, the background on 2 is fantastic, also love # 5, 12, 26 and 30.

because similarity encourages us to differ. we are actually pretty much alike... only that our differences are more susceptible to definition than our similarities. and i find it interesting that you rise the topic of human diversity by presenting a set of asian faces, which, at least for us europeans, look soo much alike.
