Our guide Laurens climbed this old baobab tree.

The main building of the wonderful Kunene River Lodge. This has been our favourite place to stay. It is hard to get to, but worth the drive.

The northern Cape Wagtail sports wonderful eyebrows but lacks the black breast marking of the southern variety

We left Kunene Lodge with regret: such a very nice place with lovely people. Our slow drive out to the road was made slower by the herd of cattle ahead of us. Several young men were encouraging them along. The two dogs had not been trained to work with the cattle at all, and just trotted uselessly along behind.

The young man's shaved head save for the braided and decorated topknot is an indication of his bachelor status. His down jacket was not made with a Namibian cattle drive in mind!

Away from the river, the combination of drought and overgrazing had made a serious impact. Most of the farmers had taken their herds of cattle away. The Himba were previously nomadic, but this is changing as the government pushes them to settle near schools and medical clinics.

The very fast-moving river plunges over a series of cliff faces.

The "Main Falls" att his time of year are not the most spectacular. This is where the water flows all year.

Massive baobab trees are dwarfed by the volume of water.
