There was actually a thin gap between the hard horizon and the haze layer in the Raleigh area this morning. The sun broke that horizon in full blaze and imparted a gorgeous pink glow to the haze at sunrise proper, seen in the top image (and lots better large on black). Eight minutes later, above (and better LOB), the sun had risen into the haze and took on a more diffuse appearance. Interesting... and sweet!
