“I worry about scientists discovering that lettuce has been fattening all along. . . .”
Erma Bombeck

lettuce
c.1290, from O.Fr. laitues, pl. of laitue, from L. lactuca "lettuce," from lac (gen. lactis) "milk"; so called in allusion to the milky juice of the plant.

LETTUCE

Lettuce is the best natural food source of the mineral Silicon; they supply over 2,000 mg. Per 100 grams. Apart from Oxygen, Silicon is the most abundant element in the soil. One of the main benefits of Silicon is that it enhances the functions of the main mineral of the human body, Calcium. Silicon foods preserve calcium metabolism, helping the body to distribute calcium elements and preventing the formation of calcium deposits around bone joints and thereby ensuring positive protection against the development of arthritic symptoms. Silicon elements also help to eliminate excess uric acid deposits from the bone structure and bloodstream. Silicon foods will also promote the growth of hair.

Lettuce is one of the best vegetable sources of the mineral Iron. As well as supplying an abundance of Iron, Lettuce is dominant in two essential vitamins that enhance the absorption of the mineral Iron: Vitamin E is very will supplied and good amounts of vitamin C are also available from fresh Lettuce. The mineral Iron helps the body to increase resistance to stress and disease. Lettuce also supplies a correct balance of the main mineral Calcium with Phosphorus and that also enhances the absorption of the mineral Iron. Lettuce also supplies good amounts of the trace mineral Copper and that is essential for Iron metabolism. Iron foods will protect you against poor and brittle fingernails, stomach ulcers, conjunctivitis and hepatitis. Lettuce is a lucky vegetable as they rarely get cooked and thereby supply an abundance of heat sensitive nutrients such as the minerals potassium, sodium, Sulphur and chlorine and vitamins A, C, B complex. Biotin is a B complex vitamin and Lettuce is one of the best vegetable sources of this precious nutrient. Biotin is the only B group vitamin that contains the mineral Sulphur and this promotes body cleansing and protection from infections. Biotin is also essential for the metabolism of fats and a deficiency of this vitamin can lead to over weight conditions, difficulty in sleeping nervousness and dermatitis. Always remember lettuce if you want to relax.

oldbabe Yummm. Looks a lot like my lettuce...lettuce with flavor. I'll take your lettuce any day over that flavorless iceburg stuff!

And the silicone explains why I have hair popping up in odd places ;-) At least I'm not bald!
