Ghost Ranch...the home of Georgia O'Keeffe

2009.07.30
Ghost Ranch is a living museum of conservation, ecology and heritage located in northern New Mexico in the landscape immortalized by painter Georgia O'Keeffe.

Ghost Ranch was given to the Presbyterian Church in 1955 by Arthur and Pheobe Pack. The 21,000 acres that comprise Ghost Ranch were part of a land grant to Pedro Martin Serrano from the King of Spain in 1766. The grant was called Piedra Lumbre (shining rock). The name "Ghost Ranch," or the local name "El Rancho de los Brujos," was derived from the many tales of ghosts and legends of hangings in the Ranch's history.

Georgia O'Keeffe and Ghost Ranch have always been connected. Although she never owned Ghost Ranch, she eventually purchased a small home from Arthur Pack and later a home in Abiquiu. She spent many years exploring and painting the Ghost Ranch environs. Her love for northern New Mexico started in 1917 ona trip O'Keeffe and her sister Claudia took to New Mexico and Colorado from their home in Canyon, Texas. Yet it was 12 years before O'Keeffe returned to New Mexico and even longer before she found her way into the beautiful valley that would eventually become her summer home.

For over fifty years the Church, the staff, the National Ghost Ranch Foundation and many friends and supporters have built the programs, facilities and grounds into a nationally known study and conference center.

1934 - From her first trip to the ranch in 1934, she was hooked and spent the summer there as a guest of ranch owners, Arthur and Phoebe Pack. In following years she would summer at Ghost Ranch and return to New York for the winter, but always think of the land as hers.Like many before her and since, when Georgia O'Keeffe first heard of Ghost Ranch, she was intrigued.
