I think the grainy look adds to the journalistic feel of the photos, which is a good thing! Nice shots.

these shots are a knockout! Picture two gave me that gut feeling - like I'm there, and the excitement. The trainer in picture 3 - that expression is fantastic. and the shoulders in pic 1: phenomenal. I think this works so well, and I get that it's a huge challenge to get the speed of movement in low light. any chance you can manipulate the light? bring one light with you and place it near for some control, but without the 'all or nothing' of flash?

I just have to say - that right arm in picture 2 makes me weak in the knees.

I also love the motion of them. And, I agree with Julia that a light in the area might help. i've had a hard time in low light with my d80, too.

I like the graininess too and the motion that brings the sparring to life. #2 is my favorite as well but I also love th framing with the ropes in #1.

Wow everyone...thanks for the feedback. I have some halogen work lights (from my garage) that I am thinking about taking. I think if I aim them up at the celling to add some reflected light it might be enough or maybe off the back wall of the gym. After hearing your feedback for the existing light photos it makes me want to work more in this direction. I have noticed more than once when I thought the flash was distracting to the boxer. They say they don't mind...but I don't like the fact that they are constantly reminded that I am there snapping away. It just seems too intrusive. Thanks again for all your super feedback!

Working in low light takes time, trouble and many many shots. If you can, bump up your ISO, and then clean the image with Neat Image or some other noise reduction tool. (i'm pretty anti-flash gun myself for various reasons) Or when in doubt... b&w ;) Nice set.
