Self Portraits in London

2009.07.05

These experimental portraits explore the self in an unfamiliar environment...how the feelings or view we have about ourselves can shift rapidly between the confident/unsure, fear/ego, communicative/silent, etc.
Whilst some show fragmentation and others cohesion, they all contain the play of balance between light and dark, the hidden and revealed. How much of this is the real self and how much is magnified or even created by the unfamiliar environment is questionable.

Usually when I visit London (very rarely) I want to leave after a day...the noise, heat, traffic and human congestion rapidly becomes too much for me. This time though, after 4 days I was still feeling comfortable and happy there...maybe because I was participating in the exhibition and my time and thoughts were contained there for most of my visit accounts for this, I don't know. I found the people and atmostphere I came into contact with very friendly, moreso than on previous visits. I am glad to be back in Wales this week, and look forward to a sing with one of my choirs later today...but I can happily say that I don't dread returning to London for a day or two next week.
:-))

lookagain Great shots - interesting and creative. Intriguing the way you made yourself part of the image in all of them. I really like #4 - because of all the different aspects of light....especially the "crown" of light on your head.

bedavid What a coincidence. Are we in a self portraits mood? :P Great shots Tom. And I do find your description very curious. They are indeed show and no show game. Really great! I hope u go to London now breeding that friendly air you´r feeling now. I guess we all have our moments and everything around changes with it! ;)

eternity65 Cool set!! like them. Did the same sort of thing past winter, but never thought of posting them somehow. Like the last one a lot, it's as if you are opened up and we can reach inside of you :-))

Unchained I entirely in agree with the words of bedavid. You see the world with the eyes of your feelings and if you self are changing, the world around you is changing, too.
Very interesting set, telling a lot about you!
