Depth of Field: New Perspectives in Light Drawing

2009.07.25

"If drawing concerns itself with line, movement and space; then the opportunity for memory and mythology to emerge is brought deep into reality..."
Statement for Imaginary Geometries exhibition 2009

These words were written to describe and support drawings on paper and canvas but if work with light is to be comprehensible and held in context with traditional and contempory drawing practice, then certain criteria need to be explored and held up to this light...

If composition is the vital element, then the vital element of composition is timing. Is there ever an end product in art practice? A conclusion drawn today, often becomes the inspiration of work of tomorrow. Or to put it another way, yesterdays practice informs todays activity...for example; all images on paper and canvas are 2 dimensional images, but the inclusion of line, movement and space induce the 3rd reality, depth of field, which ultimately gives way to the 4th dimension...

Although a drawing can be a line in 2 dimensions, the act of drawing a line can only happen in 3 and 4 dimensions...space and time.

Is there such a thing as good composition in this or these acts?
Yes, of course...but what does good composition mean?
Good composition helps us to read the image by breaking down the sum of its parts...for example; the light / dark ratio, or the scale of an object / body in comparison to a fixed line / space within the image.

To break the 'tradition' of composition in drawing or photography, means that the spectator has to work a little harder in understanding the content of the work...a deliberate distortion or uncomfortable viewing if you like.

This can be very rewarding for those that then see the image beyond composition and begin to understand 'process' and that this process concerns itself with revealing a higher intention.

All the images above concern themselves with either depth of field or distorted composition, to make an understanding of drawing as navigation and communication in time and space.

lookagain Just wonderful.... from another world, it appears. Your light drawings are evolving in a very interesting manner. The quote interests me...I've been reading a book that references modern day artists as the new shamans/mythologists...

nunuinpictures Fantastic!
What about the intention?
Do you think about what you want in the picture or is something more abstract and casual?

longimanus it is not the first time you make me travel in time and space... this time you took me to the deepest bottom of the oceans, these fluorescent deep-sea creatures look exactly I`ve seen them in documentaries and in my dreams, on the first two I even recognize spinal cords... and the last two look like jellyfish. thanks for the journey :-)
longimanus · 2009-07-28: 09:45
