Nepal: Hindu pilgrims on the road to Muktinath

2007.10.27
A river of people.

By Nepalese standards, this jeep is not overloaded...

Encampment on the banks of the river, not much in the way of sanitation.

Going first class: This helicopter is how the well to do make the pilgrimage, it is a regularly scheduled direct flight from Pokara.

There is more about trekking in Nepal on my blog.

These photos were taken descending from Muktinath to eventually get to Jomsom, the airport, Pokara, Kathmandu, and then home. As it turns out, it was an auspicious day for observant Hindu believers to visit the temple complex at Muktinath, so the road up from the valley was lined with pilgrims, many of whom were elderly and poor and who had been walking for weeks. The next day we saw several sick and disabled people on stretchers being carried out.
