Family Camp at Lake Siskiyou Day 2

2012.07.06
pixel
We started the morning in jackets around the fire. We relished this moment since we came up to the mountains from the very hot Sacramento Valley.

Then some of us hiked part of the way up Mt. Shasta. We started at about 7000 ft. elevation and hiked up to Horse Camp at about 8000 ft. elevation.

The trail continued after Horse Camp, but hikers needed to be a bit more fit and ambitious than us, and you needed ice axes and crampons.

The weather can get very scary up here at times and I'm sure this hut has saved a life or two.

On the way down we met lots of groups of hikers on their way to the summit. Their gear was intriguing...especially the boots they hiked in. They looked like very uncomfortable ski boots. It didn't look like a fun hike to me!

Later in the day, Tom took me, with my bike, up to a summit above our campground and I rode about 10 miles downhill.

The downhill trip followed one of the forks of the Sacramento River.
