Heckuva Hike to Devil's Kitchen

2012.07.14

As we started on our 4.2 mile round trip journey through a remote part of Lassen National Park, we came across this stream....the first sign of geothermal activity. The water, and the rocks surrounding it, was HOT!

Steph was still smiling at this point. After a hot uphill hike and at least a dozen mosquito bites, she wasn't smiling anymore.

We found this strange paddlewheel in one of the streams through the meadow.

We left the hot meadow and made it to the semi-shady forest. Unfortunately, this is where the uphill portion of the hike began.

We finally could smell Devil's Kitchen...sulfur was in the air.

Some of the rocks were yellow with sulfur.

The heat from the geothermal vents and the minerals in the water seemed to keep much from growing.

Before we started our hike out, we had to wait for a group on horses.

The horses couldn't go in the geothermal area.

When we made it back to the meadow, we knew we were close to the car....and lunch!
