Any martial artist can't help but notice this dojo-within-an-appliance store on Queen Street West...LA-liens, yes, it's like something straight out of Silverlake.

The admixture of Portugese signs (Falamos!), colours of students and sifus, and collection of trophies is an eye-full. Enter the Dragon fans may channel, "Mr. Han, Man!" whenever they walk by.

Last night, Emmanuelle Belle (would you believe he's over 60 years old?) created his own Nuit Blanche exhibit by sitting in the lit shop and doing his annual dust and polish of all the trophies. He chatted with me for a little while as I shot my photos. When I asked if any of his students had ever done as well as him in martial arts, he pointed at a poster behind him: his son is Canadian Weapons Arts champ! An article in 2007 described the gentrification of the neighborhood and wondered about the fate of long-standing businesses like Mr. Belle's. http://www.thestar.com/comment/columnists/article/262104 I didn't ask if he'd succeeded in selling the building yet, but he said he hoped to see me show up for class at the dojo some day.
