At the Taichung train station on our way to Taipei.
We spent the day at Danshuei, a tourist spot along the Danshuei river, northwest of Taipei.
Here, along the river, is a rare grove of Banyan trees.
On a hill above the town, with a great view of the mouth of the river, is Fort San Domingo, first built in 1629 by the Spanish. This view is from the top of a stairway of the old fort.
The fort is enclosed by a wall, of which this is the primary gate.
The British leased the fort in 1867 and added this building, which served for a long time as the British Consulate.
Just a short distance from the fort, up on the same hill, is Oxford College, the first Western-style school in Taiwan. The school was started and built by a Canadian missionary, Dr. Mackay.
A plaque near the school commemorates Dr. Mackay's service to the people of Taiwan.
On the home front, David's becoming quite the juggler.
And Johhny is now 13 years old. Happy Birthday, Johnny!
