undergroundpix Yes kat! he inspires indeed! pwede, pwede sa ating inspire-desire shirts :)
i was listening to his speech and i felt a strong sense of hope that change is about to happen. It is a long way, but Obama really does have this presence, of enjoining people to participate and believe again in the power to act, to think, to inspire everyone.. the possibilities and the responsibilities of each one to make things happen!
Inspire + Desire + Change....

elnora today, i am fortunate to be alive and bear witness to a change in the world stage - the sweeping election of the first black president of the only superpower (though in its twilight) left in the world. the magnitude of this change is of mythical proportion, symbolic, metaphorical, its realization not unlike stories we used to read in comics - surreal. and by no less than, a young junior senator, from the midwest (not cosmopolitan multi cultural centers like new york) and not even super rich - one car, one house, one wife - so wholesome. a few years before, we don't even know him, he's not even a bleep in our consciousness. of the black political personalities that has come into our consciousness - he is not the most popular nor is he the smartest nor the most stellar but, he made it. not with big money from petrodollars and big corporate donations from few elite sources such as those raised by the mccain's but mostly, from small contributions by small people, old people, the very young and even video gamers (the embedded adds in popular video games, they were fund raising on facebook!) that snowballed into something bigger than the budget of both presidentiables last election. he has demonstrated that small, consistent effort by many people can be BIG and can make the impossible happen. imagine how inspiring that is for all those who have dreamed and worked for change and are only making little impact so far. this i hope will envigorate them to work in creative ways towards their vision.

and come to think of this. five hundred years ago, black people were treated as commodity, traded and enslaved by the very white people who founded the united states of america. the subordination of the black race by the slave trade of the western world has done inhumane and inconceivable damage to that race in real life and even in the realm of stories and art. it has given rise to many racist attitude, representation and stereotypes. they have inferiorized and demonized black.

i do not expect this guy to do a miracle and solve the problems of the country he is president of or change the world during his term or do better than mccain though i believe he would be able to do some milestones in that area. what i am more intersted in is the symbol he represents - black president of one of the most powerful countries in the world - imagine the psychic impact of black equated with that! imagine, the kids of this generation will have as part of their consciousness a black man as the president of a powerful country and a black first family in the white house. and imagine how this phenomena will change the world of symbols and metaphors. most likely not immediately. but, slowly, over the centuries, it will for sure.

Change though often long time in the making, is indeed possible. And what hope this brings.
