The Meiji Jingu is the most important of all Shinto shrine. Built in 1920 by the Emperor Meiji for the Empress Shoken, the main building of the shrine is located in the middle of a 75 acre forest in the middle of Tokyo city. It is said that there are 100,000 trees in this forest and the trees have been donated by 100,000 visitors from all over Japan when the shrine was reconstructed in 1958 after a great fire that destroyed the original buildings. Although the buildings were reconstructed, they are nothing but authentic using the same or similar materials.
