Tortilla Magic

2007.03.25

All the posts of kids and cooking reminded me that I never posted the photos from our tortilla night when I visited my sister in January!

When we were growing up, our Grandma Poncha used to make tortillas every morning. She had a barrel of flour in the kitchen, she made so many. She used to let us roll our own tortillas. Hers were always perfectly round (one handed no less) but ours looked more like Mickey Mouse or a map of the U.S. My sister and I tried to get her recipe but she didn't measure anything, never did. I'm pretty sure it was magic.

So, we decided to have tortilla night to share some of that history with my nieces - memories of their great-grandma, rolling pin madness, flour flicking fun, and general tortilla w/butter goodness.

They may not have looked good, but they tasted good. :) Definitely felt some of my grandmother's magic at work that night.

anniepie Oh....... there is nothing like some home made tortillas with some butter. Yummy!!!!!!!!!

Some beans with chorizo with those tortillas, oh my goodness just the thought makes my mouth water. :)

I sound like I haven't eaten for weeks.

pattyb I completely agree with Anniepie! The minute I saw the tortilla on the grill, I was thinking "butter"! My girlfriend would invite me over when her Grandmother would come for Christmas Eve and make tortillas, I was in heaven! ; )

vollenda It is fun, a lot of work, but fun. When ever we make them ourselves, it reminds me how much so. My grandma made it look easy. But it was well worth it. Not that many "survived" very long off the grill! :) Well, we had to make sure they came out okay.

A tortilla with butter is the best, but it's also great with a bowl of beans, and maybe a little cheese. I could eat that every day and never get tired of it. :)
