Confession

2007.06.06

I have more daisy photos to post, but right now I'm not as happy with them as I was. I'll get back to them later. I think. Instead, here are roses I picked up this weekend. I was NOT going to buy any flowers. I had my mom's car for the weekend and I was going to go out exploring. And then I got sick and when I went to buy some cold medicine, these were STARING me in the face. Since my immune system was so low, I didn't even try to resist. :)

I have a confession to make...I don't...know...anything about...studio lighting. Whew, there I said it. I mean as far as using studio lights and multiple flashes, etc. go. It's always gone over my head. And also, for a long time, I could barely afford film, let alone extras like lights and flashes, so I didn't really have a chance to experiment and learn with it. Which is how I pick things up. Sure I used some fill flash here or there and bounced flash once in a while. But nothing fancy. So over the years, I've learned to work with natural light. It was a cheap light source. :)

I studied it. How it works. When it looks best. How to use it to create effects. How it changes colors from dawn to dusk. How great cloudy days can be. How harsh it can be. I've come to love natural light and all it's nuances so even though I can afford more toys now, I haven't bothered to get them. So these were taken indoors, in front of my sliding glass door, with natural light.

Stats - D200, 70-180 macro lens, ISO 100, on a tripod.

1 - 105mm 1/20s @ F5.6
2 - 105mm 2sec @ F36

Carley Your roses are spectacularly beautiful!!
I feel better reading your words.....I'm in that stage now of learning about natural light and how to use it.....and finding it fascinating! It's not so much a matter of affording the toys....It's a matter of learning one thing at a time (like how to use the camera!)
Carley · 2007-06-05: 22:50

vollenda Would you believe he snubbed them! I was trying to get him to pose with them and he just gave them a cursory sniff!

I am feeling better. Thanks. :)

kangshung I agree - no need for confessions. You certainly have mastered natural light. I too have never used anything but natural light and certainly don't have your level of understanding. Beautiful photos as usual - the light is sensational.

????? Lisa, I've been following this blog for a while now. Like I have said before, just basic weekend wedding gigs are below you. The pics you take are quite pro. You should persue things for magazines and papers for $$ a bit, freelance etc. Just my opinion. Keep'em comin' very nice!

SheriJ Natural light is always best in my mind.. I think pictures can get too studio and phony and fake! You always do an awesome job and these are just over the top!! Hope you feel well and that spike is taking good care of you!!
SheriJ · 2007-06-06: 09:56
anshuad Thats quite true - what you said about the natural light. I have just tried the continuous light in a studio for my portrait set...and liked it. But I cannot imagine braving the strong lights or using flashes. I just dont like the flash units I think. I am sure many people prefer not to use it if they could. Thanks for the rose set and get well soon :)

demitri nice combination, red against black!
demitri · 2007-06-06: 12:11
mariovirga Sun light is better. Sometimes we complicate the life in study, when we would have to observe the natural light and to understand as one moves.
Great shots!
mariovirga · 2007-06-06: 12:24

photopoet I also love natural light and I'm always looking at your photos to glean some hints. Wonderful set.
photopoet · 2007-06-06: 20:54
mugsycat Natural light is the best, but a couple of $5 lights with reveal bulbs in them can help on a crappy day. Nice work.
mugsycat · 2007-06-06: 21:06
emmetan I always like natural light... I like no 2
emmetan · 2007-06-07: 20:05
