Testing The Water

2007.06.10

Photopoet made a comment on my Hitchcock post about my abilty to handhold my lens and stay steady. Part of the reason I'm able to do it is my 70-300 is a VR lens, a vibraton reduction lens. It has built in stabilization so I can use lower shutter speeds without camera shake. I decided to test it out today with the waterfall that is right below my apartment. (It's not a real stream, but man-made).

I also picked the waterfall because I like to play around with shutter speeds and water. It was one of the first things that wowed me in landscape photography - how the photographer could affect the mood of the shot based on their camera settings. #1 was taken in the morning under overcast skies. I thought the even lighting worked with the effect of the water. The second shot I took in the afternoon so the water drops would catch the sunlight.

Both shots were taken with the D200 and my 70-300VR lens, ISO 400, shutter priority, hand held.

1 - 300mm 1/15s @ F25 (8:45 a.m.)
2 - 300mm 1/3200 sec @ F9 (2:45 p.m.)

P.S. I did place my elbow on the rail of my balcony for a little extra support.

photopoet Ah—the secret is out—your elbow as ballast. Great set.I especially like second photo. That spray feels as if it could move beyond the confines of the computer screen.

vollenda Ha ha! You caught me. I guess it wasn't a true test since I cheated a little on the first shot. ;)

kangshung Interesting test - both are great photos and they do have very different ambiences. I love VR - you can definitely hand hold down to 1/15sec!

SheriJ I never use a tripod either I don't have time to stop set up I am usually on the move . I lean or let my elbows lean on anything that is stable! Awesome water series!!

carmitage Thank you for the infos. It certainly looks good.

fireflymairi Very interesting test you did there. So the vibration reduction really does it's job hey! I was thinking of getting a lens with IS (Canon's Image Stabilisation) - seems to work pretty well. Does add to the weight of the lens though, which I think makes you shake even more! haha Good job on these shots mate.
