Tulips Dressed In Black

2007.08.07

Bought some tulips this weekend. I picked them for the touches of pink in them. Today's set is against a black background, tomorrow will be with a white background. Sunday morning was overcast and cool so I took them out on the balcony to shoot. The sun peaked thru a bit but mostly it was lovely even lighting.

I didn't really plan on shooting them with the 24mm lens. It's not one I would normally pull out for a flower photo shoot. It's actually the last lens I would normally use. But it's all about the stretch and the challenge, right? And it was a challenge too. Trying to fill the frame. Trying to see them differently. #3 was kind of iffy for me. I had planned on cropping it to a panorama but it didn't fit. There's a lot of space left in the upper portion. Does it work? There's a lot of space in #4 as well. It makes me nervous.

Stats- D200 w/70-180macro lens
1-70mm 1/20s @ F32

Stats D200 w/24mm lens
2-1/1250s @ F2.8
3-1/1250s @ F2.8
4-1/1000s @ F2.8
5-1/1600s @ F2.8

P.S. Re-edited to clean up the black. I couldn't help it. It's the perfectionist in me. :)

Carley I think that these shots are amazingly beautiful....especially the first and the last 2! Wow!

harryOB The photos absolutely work - I for one love the power of "negative" space - you can really direct the viewers eye or bring attention to your subject. Beautiful work here! The JPEG format is not helping with the subtle different shades of dark gray - I noticed a little stair-stepping. It is minor though. Nice photos.

vollenda It's supposed to be all black. :( I didn't see that in the original. It must have been my conversion.
vollenda · 2007-08-06: 23:50
KC727 Beautiful colours!! I also use D200 but without micro lens. At the moment, I'm considering whether to buy one.

elkegrocholl Do not become nervous !!!
These are "great " pictures, with a "great" backround and a "great" colour of beautiful tulips !!! Perfect !!!

kangshung These are all great shots - but #1 is sensational! I am also thinking about macro lenses and would love to get hold of a Nikon 70-180 macro, but they seem to be very scarce. I agree with harryOB about the '"negative" space'.

anshuad Love the tender shots :)

vollenda Thanks all!

I love my macro lens. It opened up a whole new world when I started using it. :) If you can get your hands on one, zoom or prime, I think you'll like it!

chipotle you know who stevie ray vaughn was. right? his brother jimmie vaughn is a gifted guitarist, too. the critics say that stevie ray was a better guitarist, though, because he knew when NOT to play.

the space works beautifully.
chipotle · 2007-08-07: 09:52
photopoet I think that the space works. It's negative space that is aesthetically pleasing in its own right. Stunning set. My favorites are one, four and five.

storytaylor very nice tones. I love the texture captured on the petals, the perfect lines and the soft lighting in the gentle curves of the petals really adds to it. nicely done vollenda
