Meanwhile, Back At The Barn

2007.09.15
Don't they ever get full?

Cheese!

Psst, don't look, but there's a girl behind you with a funny looking nose.

Around here, being small is a good thing!

Fine, I'll take a shower, but I'm not wearing curlers out in public!

Well, there's no radio, but I couldn't rest my eyes like this if I was driving a car.

A few of the animal shots at the Fair. The big, red barn was really dark and a little crowded, so again it was hard to get good shots in. :) I didn't want to use my flash so I bumped the iso up to 1600, you can see some grain.

You know what's funny? I read two separate things this week that basically said photography was about observing and not being in the moment. Reading those comments made me feel like the authors don't get what photography is all about.

These animals, they live in the moment. They don't live for tomorrow, they don't live in the past. They are only concerned about the here and now. To me, photography is like that. I am never detached or unfeeling when taking a photo. I am not thinking about tomorrow or my bills or my laundry. Only what's in front of me and around me.

I like these quotes because I think they express what I feel more eloquently than I could...

"Photography is not documentary, but intuition, a poetic experience. It's drowning yourself, dissolving yourself and then sniff, sniff, sniff - being sensitive to coincidence." Henri Cartier-Bresson

"Out in the field I try not to hold expectations. I try to achieve an openness. The senses heighten so that I'm totally immersed in what's happening at the moment. I want to be receptive to an image coming together."~Keith Lazelle

And my favorite...

"Taking pictures is savoring life intensely, every hundredth of a second."~Marc Riboud

P.S. Thank you for all your comments on Spike's Post. As usual, he's walking around all smug about it. :) Today was crazy so I will catch up on your blogs tomorrow! Sorry 'bout that. :)

Carley A wonderful set and right-on quotes. I agree that the people who talked about not being in the moment just don't understand. Here's another quote: "A camera is a tool that teaches you to see without a camera."

ps: I just love your captions!!

kangshung These are all brilliant photos Lisa, but I really like the first 3 mainly because of what the animals' eyes are communicating and I think your captions echo this so well.

As for the theory - I've also been thinking about this lately - and feel that it's absolutely necessary to be in the moment so as to be completely receptive to the subject and not reacting against it, but this is not easy. I cannot help coming back to the words of Garry Winogrand - "I photograph to see what things look like photographed".
