Day of the Dead

2007.11.03

On Thursday, I took the day off and went into LA to Olvera Street to see the Day of the Dead festivities. I was going to post these on Friday but I decided not to move Spike. :)

My family has never celebrated the Day of the Dead. It's more something that we do all year. Since I was a little girl, I've been going to the cemetary with my grandmother to take flowers to the graves of the family. It was never morbid or a scary thing. Just a part of life. My sister and I would wander around and look at the names and the dates and ask questions about the family.

Now, I go to the cemetary with my mom and grandpa to visit my grandma's grave. It isn't that we have to go to the cemetary to talk to her or think of her. But leaving flowers for her, which she loved, is a way of making her part of special days like holidays and her birthday. The cemetary is always filled with flowers and decorations and families. There's talking and praying and laughing and sometimes music. I've thought of taking my camera with me sometimes to capture what it's like but it never felt right.

Anyway, I left a note for my grandma in an offering basket while I was there. Her birthday was on Tuesday. I said that I hoped that she could see the munchkins and how funny and cute they were. I'm sure she does. I just wish she were still with us to see them so Max could have met her too. And for me, to be honest. I still miss her so...

chipotle they have a similar tradition in new orleans in observing all saints day. the local courts close for it, even. i love the idea of incorporating death and in directly remembering your ancestors into the regular rituals of life. it seems so much healthier to me than not acknowledging that it is part of the life cycle.

this is a special set.

that sugar skull makes my teeth hurt, though.

jendayee What a fun way to celebrate deads !!!
At home it's also very cool, we meet lots of people in the cemetery, at night everyone light candles on family tombs but also for those we knew as friends, and it's really beautiful !

photopoet Thanks for sharing both the meaning of the day and your own recollections. Great set. My favorite is the second. When we were in New Mexico we attended a folk fair where a number of pieces celebrated the Day of the Dead.

kangshung Very colourful! I like the way this festival integrates death so much into life, and your shots capture this element so well.

25toLife I went to a day of the dead party in LA 4 years ago. Its when you celebrate the folks that have passed that year. Unfortunately, it was the year my mom had passed - I did my best to celebrate. Looking back, it was a really cool thing to do for her. GREAT POST.

Jannie This is so very cool. I have always been fascinated by this holiday, only partly because I was born on All Hallows Eve. I also find it interesting that so many cultures shun anything related to death & dying, while others embrace it. I think your upbringing as you describe it is about as healthy as it gets! This is a wonderful post, so colorful & in spite of the theme, so full of life. Thank you for posting this!!!
