All The Printed Horses

2008.06.11
One of the carousel horses at Disneyland. A digital photo with Bleach Bypass (a FILM print process) applied to it.

Bleach Bypass has been used since the 1960s and is also used in films. If you watch The Namesake, there is a behind the scenes look at how photographs influenced the look of the fim (including examples) and Bleach Bypass was used for it.

#13 from yesterday's post was processed with the Orton Effect (another FILM printing process that people figured out how to do in photoshop). So if anyone tells you that using FILM is purer than digital, don't believe them. There has been manipulation of negatives since the dawn of photography, including burning and dodging! Just ask Ansel.

This is a scan of an 8x10 that I printed in my "darkroom". It's a carousel horse from a carousel in Santa Barbara. The top 3 photos reminded me that I had this one tucked away in a portfolio.

This is a scan of a 5x7 that I printed in my "darkroom" about 7 or 8 years ago. Not a carousel horse, but I thought he fit. :)

Bolder had a post on Monday that got me thinking. It's about printing your photos. You might want to check it out. And maybe wish him some luck as he gets ready to do another Ironman!

Anyway, printing my photos is something I've always done - from 4x6 to 16x20s. The only photos I have on the walls of my apartment are mine. Some printed by me, some printed by a friend, and some that I sent out to print (all my medium and large format slides/negatives and 35mm slides - man, I miss Velvia). My mom, sister, grandpa, and some of friends all have my photos on their walls (mostly portraits but some landscapes too). It's a great feeling to see my work on their walls.

But really what I want to talk about is back in the day when I used to print my own black and white photos. I have an enlarger to print 35 mm film and the whole set up - trays, drying racks, tongs, red light. And I used to have the various chemicals and paper too. I had holders to print 8x10s, 8x12s, and 5x7s. I only ever did black and white though. Color seemed too complicated. :)

I liked printing my own black and white photos because I could control the contrast and the cropping and the exposure. I could decide to print with a border or not. I could do some burning and dodging (though I was not really good at it). I always started out with a test print and did strips at various exposures. Then I would decide which worked best and go from there. Ansel Adams I was not, but it was fun and there were many late nights because of it!

I stopped printing for a few reasons. I have a one bedroom apartment and no counter space in the bathroom for the trays so I had to hang black cloth around a little area in my closet where I had some file cabinets. Spike ruined a couple of rolls of film and some prints by bursting in and letting light in. And once he jumped into the trays and I had to give him a bath to get the chemicals off him (and still have a scar from the ensuing fight). The local photography shop where I used to buy my supplies closed up. And I was deep in debt so I couldn't afford film and supplies as much.

I would like to print again one day. Hopefully, when/if I get a little house, I can build a darkroom in it or the garage. One that Spike can't break into. Then I could see myself printing again! :)

MidsummerSilence Lisa these are great. I love the real horse to end this set... it seems to wrap up your thinking very well. thanks for sharing all your information and these beautiful photographs. Best of luck, and hope to see you printing again, with Spike sitting outside of that locked darkroom door. =)

Lynda Very nice and informative set. But I miss Spike- will you be posting on Caturday- 23rd June?

noptek Nice set. I like the last one. I followed the same path with b&w printings. Now I've ended it too

DancingDolphin Do you use Photoshop? I've used that & InDesign in my work for years and LOVE messing around with my photos. I'm sure it's not exactly the same but everything you mentioned can be done digitally. I recently took a short 4 day class in PS and learned some more "tricks"!

Back to your shots! My favorite is the b/w carousel horse.... very nice (and interesting) post!

bolder thanks for the well wishes and the shout out!

these days, most people are only going to find out about the old printing ways if they take a course on it, i'm envious of your past work with film, i'm sure it greatly contributed to your skills today...

the #13 Orton was great! i haven't done an Orton in a long time, need to do one again before i forget the technique...

kangshung A great set Lisa and very informative. Agree totally about photo manipulation although digital does allow people to go a bit over the top sometimes. I've been looking at how to get my old Calumet 4x5 operating in the last few days - must buy some film! Love #5 above.

Carley These are so cool, Lisa! I wish I understood what you're describing in what your wrote...about the different effects. That's something that I still hope to learn about some day.
Carley · 2008-06-11: 20:15
Jannie Lisa I learn so much from you. This is a wonderful post. Hard to pick a fave, I love all of these shots!! I really do love the last shot.
