Building Blocks

2008.06.12
Digital photo of Mr. Toads house @ Disneyland.

Digital photo of the building across the street from mewith late afternoon light coming through the "window" of the stairwell.

Scan of an 8x10 print of the Claremont Colleges.

Scan of a full frame print of the San Gabriel Mission taken years ago. This is an example of burning and dodging gone awry. ;) You can see it in the bottom right corner of the window. The black frame is the part unexposed part of the negative to give it's own natural border.

Scan of a 5x7 of the old ticket counters at Union Station in Los Angeles. This is one of my favorite prints of Union Station. It always makes me wonder what it was like when it was busy and filled with people instead of only used for movies and tv shows.

Another mix of old and new - digital photos and scans of prints.

I used to have an aversion to sending out my negatives and slides to be processed or printed. After a roll that I took on my first and only trip to Myrtle Beach and Charleston was lost, I was nervous about it happening again. Luckily, I found a lab near me after that where I could take my stuff. They knew me by name and I could work with them on what I wanted. Alas, with the digital age, they got less and less work and they closed up shop a couple of years ago.

You’d think that once I started shooting digital I would print more, since I can just upload the file. In some ways I have, because I print photos of the M&Ms a lot and have made photo books with their photos for all the family. But I don’t often print my other photos.

I think it’s because I have all my favorites loaded on my laptop and setup as backgrounds and screensavers. I see them all the time. Pre-digital, I was out of luck on viewing my negatives unless they were printed. The slides I could view with my projector and screen (yes, I’m telling you I have A LOT of equipment for a one bedroom apartment, not to mention a bike and a set of wheels in my bedroom!). I would turn out the lights, pop the popcorn and go thru my slides. I didn’t do that very often though (but cool and fun to do). But still, I didn’t see them every day like now.

I sometimes wonder if the digital frame will do away with the print. That someday there will be big poster size frames you can have on your wall and that will allow you to switch your artwork with the touch of the button. I know that my mom loves the one we bought her.

I hope not though. They thought the same thing with books but there is something about the feel of reading a book that you don't really get from a digital reader - the magic of turning the page. There's magic in the print too. :)

etodd80 Digital has sure changed the world, hasn't it...

#2 is a very cool exposure, interesting variation in lighting and tones.

tcalbaz I like #2 and #4. The lines are so intriguing.

Jannie You have said it so eloquently... the magic of turning the page. I vow to print several of my treasured photos immediately. I am so guilty of printing nothing. I love love love your B&W. #4 is stunning. And so is #5. I have this almost identical shot taken with my first Nikon Coolpix 5 years ago when my BFF & I took the train to Santa Fe to celebrate our b-days. I enjoy your narrative so much. I wish for you a little house by the beach with room enough for you & Spike, your photo equipment, and a guest room for the 3Ms to visit Auntie Issa!!

Emma I love the comp in 4!

I hear what you are saying, I have really only ever known digital in depth. I had a crappy film camera when I was younger, but it was very basic and was only ever used for snapshots. I have only printed a few pics off at home on a printer my partner purchased me especially for photographs (he gave it me in the hope I would be printing off pics on a more regular basis), however I have only used it to print off some holiday pics of us for an album. Sad really...

Rigadon I love the light coming through in the second picture

And I really like the composition of the 4th

TIM927 I dont print much, call me lazy or disorganized, but for me the difference is really big, to have the photo in your hands,,,,that is great, with digital we gain a lot of things but we lose a feeling...

I think 4th is a masterpiece here, love it.

Lynda Very interesting set and commentary.

haushinka Very interesting mix. I honestly hope it doesn't get lost, I was born almost in digital era, but I hope someday to learn printing, I couldn't agree more when you say there's magic in printing!!:)

focussed oohhh..these are wonderful Lisa...I like the idea of mixing the film shots in with the digital ones.....once i realized what you had done I found myself trying to guess which was which without reading the comments...I think 2 could pass as a film shot...that shot along with #4 are my favs. The simplicities of the lines with the b&w are a wonderful combination...
I totally agree with you. Having a photo in your hands is a whole other ball game to just looking at it on your computer..but we are in the age of instant gratification and it's easy to forget about getting your shots printed when you have them right in front of you every day..

storytaylor wonderful pictures. I agree, is wonderful to see them on paper, but we are in a new generation, our time is protect our planet and you (me, every one who have a photo machine) help the planet when we save tons of paper, ink, money, and millions of trees – a simple way to protect the environment, and yes the digital photos are a revolution on that (if you d´ont print). I hope so and you of course my friend. It´s a powerful post today

meiling Great BWs again, thanks for sharing. Totally agree with you about the feel of reading a book –– it sure beats digital reading; however, books do unfortunately go out of date as soon as they are printed –– I refer particularly to text books where the need to be up-to-date on what you are learning is essential.

Nayah Wonderful set! I especially love the last one! :))) In my favs!
