TSC - Spike & Sophie

2008.06.13
Spike Mug Shots. That's what these prints remind me of. ;)

He looks like such a baby here! He was probably 2ish here.

Poor kid didn't know what hit him!

Sophie was a very good model and one of my favorites. :) I really miss her. She was such a card and very loving.

More scans of prints of my 35mm negatives. Probably Ilford film since it was my favorite b&w film to shoot with. The 8x10s were ones I made in the darkroom and the one of Sophie was a print I had made at the local lab.

When I first got Spike, I was living at my mom’s house and she had a little dachshund named Sophie. Sophie was really the family dog as we all claimed her, from my grandparents down to Morgan & Maddie.

Sophie was used to having cats around. When my mom got her, my sister’s cat (Boo Boo Kitty) was still at my mom’s while Susan was at UCLA. Then after Susan moved away and I moved back into my mom’s, I adopted a stray kitten (Shadow) that tried to nurse from Sophie. And then there was Spike.

I think she felt like a mom to them. If I wanted Shadow to come home, I would say “Sophie go get Shadow” and she would run outside and bark and sure enough, he would pop over the fence. With Spike, I was able to let him go out into the backyard and hang out with Sophie and he never left as long as she was with him. They would wrestle or snooze in the sun together. I think he missed her when we moved into my apartment.

A few years ago, my mom, grandpa, Sophie, and I went to AZ to visit Susan and the kids. I left Spike in a kennel and when we got home, we all stopped to pick him up. He was not happy! He was caterwauling and crying like he was being tortured (such a drama queen!). But then Sophie went up to his carrier and stuck her nose in and worked her mojo and then he was calm and quiet.

Sophie’s gone now but not forgotten. I think she’s why Spike gets along better with dogs than with cats.

Lynda Lovely shots. You always capture the character of your sunjects. Nice to hear the history of your pets, too.

haushinka I used to have a cat too when I got my dog, and as they were almost the same size they did everything together, even slept together. When my dog grew big they still were the best friends and it was such a fun to see them play!
Sophie is a beauty, and of course Spike is Spike :) I love his face on #2, just adorable!

Carley I love your shots and your story!! I have a friend whose dachshund and cats also get along so well. Her theory is that the dog doesn't scare the cats because they are just about the same size......

meiling Great BWs. And the story is simply touching. So sorry about Sophie. I, too, can't imagine what my life would have been for the past 12 years if Ninzy wasn't with me –– it would certainly not be as rich without her companionship. The way she greets me each morning makes getting out of bed worthwhile.

Thank you so much for sharing this lovely post, and have a great weekend.

Emma Such a lovely pic of Sophie.

Spike really does look younger in #2, yet it's hard to understand how...

A wonderful set, which is made even more interesting with your supporting words.
