The men on the road

2008.08.30

Rob, an Australian tourist just graduated from university, has spent 1 month riding from Hongkong to Beijing on his bicycle. I talked with him when he was cleaning up the mess in his hostel room,he would leave for Xian and pass through Mongolia to Europe. A long trip is just waiting for him.

So does Alexandre,a French-Canadian who has travelled around half of the world, has a lot of experiences from his exciting and mysterious adventure in Eurasia. You can find lots of photos capturing some interesting moments during his trip in his blog. And now, he live in Xian for his Chinese language course in a normal college.

I really want to know what are their reason to be on the road. How about their families and jobs, or maybe they don't care at all?

Alexandre Hi Yin,

That's an interesting question. Some travellers miss their families, others don't. Some only travel over a very short period of time, two or three weeks, which to me is not long enough to miss your family.

Some travel over a long period of time, one year, two years or more, without never going back to their homeland. Some of these travellers do it to escape from their country that they find boring.

You know, there is something very interesting about this. In Canada, the USA, Europe or Australia, in industrialized countries in general, there are much more foreign people than there are in China or in any other country. Foreigners make up approximately 20 to 30% of the whole population, the exact figure varies according to the country. The number one reason to immigrate to the Western World is to escape from a bad situation going on in one's country, war or poverty, for instance. People dream of finding heaven on earth while escaping from hell.

Most travellers think the exact opposite. Most people who spend long periods of time abroad are escaping from their country that they find "dull" or boring. In the Western World everything is so well ordered. There is almost never anything unexpected happening. Everything is planned and everything is going according to the plan.

Most travellers that I've met, who are spending over six months abroad tell me the same thing: they prefer their lives in countries that are less ordered, perhaps a little bit chaotic, than what they were experiencing in their native land.

But I think there is some kind of bias in this way of thinking. The life of a foreigner who comes from an industrialized country to a poor one is much easier than that of a local. One dollar (canadian, american, australian or neozelandan), one euro or one pound can buy so many foreign currencies. In China, for instance, one euro can buy 10 yuans. The minimum wage in Europe is about 8 euros an hour and people work an average of 40 hours a week, depending on the country. So in the minimum, Europeans can earn 1400 euros a month, that is 14000 yuans, for only one month. And remember that, this is only the minimum wage! With 1400 euros a month, you can barely live in Europe. Everything is very expensive there. But when they come to China with their 14000 yuans, the cost of living becomes very cheap to them.

You also asked about jobs. Most travellers don't have a steady job in their country. They work for some months, they save money, they quit their job and they go abroad! That's what I did. I was living at my parents' place so I did not have to pay for anything (food, rent, etc.) so I could save a lot of money very fast.

I hope I answered all of your questions.
