[enlarge] - they got cool trees here. most are wider than tall, and they have this shaggy bark that makes them all look old.

sidwalk near the national museaum. yeah, it's curled up like a wake of sorts. very cool.

really big jet of water in the lake. the wind was blowing it all over the place. i got soaked riding past. it's narrow, but it's really high. this makes for an impressive landmark visible from most of town.

this town has a thing for roses, all types, all colors. this one was right beside the bike rental.

Arrived in Canberra at about 10:00 am Monday. Cabbed to the hotel. Correction: a very nice hotel. This is the first time I’ve ever had a hotel room with a doorbell. I need to thank the host who set this trip up for me.

I was still awake, and somewhat invigorated from arrival. The hotel rents bicycles, so I hired one and took off. Canberra is a fairly new city, built around a lake. A loop of the lake is about 30 km. I rode it, got oriented to the town, and took lots of pictures.

Dinner was great. A friend got some intel on a local place. It was hole-in-the-wall bar. But for $4 I ate very well. The place had a big counter full of butchered meats, sausages and such. You simply pick a piece and pay for it. They slap it on a plate and you're left to cook it yourself on the big grills in the center of the dinning room. Condiments, sauces, salads, and such are low-key and buffet style, free with the meat. Lots of taps too. My current favorite is Toohey's Black Ale. (the bottled water in the hotel mini-bar is $7.50 each.) So I’m happy.

More later.....
