If you're in or near DC, and you like photography, than you know about the Corcoran Gallery. It's a private gallery next door to The White House. For a list of reasons, photography is always well represented at the Corcoran. For the last few weeks there have been two photo exhibits up. I went to check them out. My impressions:
Ansel Adams: awe and reverence. All the classics you remember, and many others you wouldn't expect, including still life's of a single rose, up close. Nice portraits too. An amazing technician.
Annie Leibovitz: stopped my brian cold. It was like someone drew a large caliber handgun to my face. So much work, and so much of it was that good. She can see people, and she shows you.
Both exhibits are hung beautifully. Ansel first, then Annie. It flowed nicely.
Worth the trip.
Sorry, no cameras allowed in the exhibit space. I would have felt stupid, or at least irreverent anyway.
When I stepped out of the gallery, some dark clouds had moved in, but they hadn't completely shut out the late afternoon sky. A low beam of light came across the ellipse, making Winged Victory glow against the gloom. It was funny, as I stood there, off to the side changing lenses, I could hear people exiting the gallery. Each group would step outside, take three paces, and stop to stare at the statue. It was a special moment, and everyone was noticing.
