Day 4 - New Mexico/Arizona/Nevada

2008.07.19
Start of the day... time to leave New Mexico

The BNSF

Welcome to Arizona!

The rats of the southwest

Staying on 40 W

Laura insisted we stop at one of the Indian Reservation tourist stops. I wonder what's in my right hand, hmm....

So as we drove onto the grounds of the Petrified Forest National Park, Laura protests, "Where are all the trees???" It is at this point I have to break the news to Laura that petrified means fossilized, which means they were buried. Laura frowns.

Yeah Painted Desert!

All the different shades were beautiful to behold.

Inside the old inn on the grounds.

A Route 66 casualty.

See the carving in the shaded side of the rock? This place was called "Newspaper Rock" because of the multitude of petroglyphs.

This spot reminded me of those arts and crafts bottles filled up with layers of different color sand.

You can see where the elements are deconstructing the cliffs.

This was at the top of the epic Blue Mesa trail.

More incredible layers.

Finally! Our first sighting of petrified wood.

A father and son atop a hill in the distance watch as the storm rolls in from the southwest.

Teepee Hotel!!!! It's just like in the movie Cars, except these are teepees, not orange cones.

So we stopped in flagstaff for food. It was supposed to take only a few minute. We got lost, however, and then got stuck behind a train. See it coming in from the right?

7-10 minutes later, ANOTHER train came in from the right!

This is my face of disbelief waiting in front of the trains.

The mountains before us as we headed into Nevada.

Sunset over mountain tops....what a sight.

Just before crossing the Nevada border, we got stopped at a police checkpoint. They made us pull over and they searched the cartop carrier and inside the car. We couldn't figure out the reason for the stop until we hit Hoover Dam....they were looking for terrorists.

We passed our first casino not 5 minutes from the border!

View of the strip as we came down from the mountains.
