Golden Pagoda (2)

2008.10.13
Shwedagon Pagoda is currently decorated with bamboo scaffolding. Once a year, the stupa trustees collect donations and offer gold plates.

This is the biggest bamboo scaffolding project I have ever seen in my life.

The golden pagoda from a different angle... you see the moon being full on your right upper corner?

This little nun was saying prayers to honor the auspicious month of THADINGYUT...

A typical Burmese girl (kid) paying homage to the stupa... her name is Su Lae Naing whose age is merely 4...

Friends:

Tomorrow is full moon day of Thadingyut. On the full moon day enmarking the end of religious lent, Burmese people enjoy one of the biggest countrywide festivals, the festival of light. Buddhists welcome Lord Buddha coming down from heaven with colorful lights and robes, according to the legend. Meanwhile, this is one of the most important and auspicious celebrations for Buddhist. In line with such auspicious occasion, I have decided to post the photos of Shwedagon Pagoda, the centre of the relics of Lord Buddha.

The Shwedagon Pagoda, officially titled Shwedagon Zedi Daw, is a 98-meter (approx. 321.5 feet) gilded stupa located in Yangon, capital of Burma. The pagoda lies to the west of Kandawgyi Lake, on Singuttara Hill, thus dominating the skyline of the city. It is the most sacred Buddhist pagoda for the Burmese with relics of the past four Buddhas enshrined within. According to legend, the Shwedagon Pagoda is 2,500 years old. Archaeologists believe the stupa was actually built sometime between the 6th and 10th centuries.
