Math in Nature

2008.03.18
This shot was almost completely accidental, but I liked its sinusoidal shape.

A very nice example of fractal branching.

Another good natural fractal.

Hopefully the mathematics in this one needs no explanation.

I'm a mathematician, so (unfortunately?) I see math exemplified frequently in the natural world. Sometimes the examples are reasonably photogenic....

LostAspen Geek! ::snort:: ...Guess I don't have much room to talk, I like all of them a whole lot!

focussed oh gee..The sound of the word "maths" sends shivers down my spine. I always felt my dumbest when I was sitting in a maths class :(
Even hating math as much as I do however, I cant deny that shot #4 is way way cool!

coyoteself Uh oh Renee. Matt's got your other camera and how does one geek, call another geek a geek? I never did think of the world as math, but it does make a lot of sense in so many different ways. Good set Matt. Keep it up.

moonofthewild Stop making me look up words in the dictionary! I looked up the word sinusoidal and still don't understand it. I love the #3 and the depth of field beyond it--it draws a person into the photo. I like the natural fractals, and the wierd way of looking at a tree. I really like the wave pattern of the first one. Good catch!
