Have You touched the owl?
This is the question on everyone's lips in Dijon the night before an exam or the morning of a wedding - in short, whenever anyone is about to embark on an important event.
The small stone owl is the good luck charm of the entire town. It sits on one of the flying buttresses of the Notre-Dame Church, in the aptly-named Rue de la Chouette ( in French, "chouette" means owl). It is open to question whether it was the architect's trade mark or that of a master stone carver.
Watch carefully and linger awhile. You are almost sure to see a housewife on her way home from the market, a police officer, a couple in love or a bunch of tourists stop on the way past and give the bird, which symbolises wisdom, an affectionate stroke while making a wish.
