Emma & The Cherokee

Emma & The Cherokee. I imagine you're curious as to how todays title came about, eh? Really it's little more than the combination of two items that rank rather high on my list of possessions. One is a scarf that was knitted by my friend Emma, the other a very colorful basket, hand woven by an old Cherokee elder in North Carolina.

I was passing through Cherokee a few years back and spotted an elderly woman weaving baskets. It was magic to watch her old weathered fingers dance with the wood strips to create these works of art. I was so struck by the beauty of her work that I had to bring a piece home.

The scarf came about because of my interest in knitting. I've never tried to knit (mostly because I'm not allowed dangerous objects) but become mesmerized watching someone perform the beautiful repetitions that form such soft and wonderful couture. Emma, knowing my fascination with knitting and my love of a warm scarf, gifted me with this one just before I took photo one for project 365.

Today I put the two items together simply because I wanted to show off the creative abilities of a stranger, and a friend.

Nice composition and story. I knit and it's very relaxing and satisfying to create something.
