Mt. LeConte!

Mt. LeConte is one of my sacred places. At nearly 6,600 feet high and 11 miles of walking at the very least it has marked me indelibly.

Two years ago I prayed for death on this mountain. I was miserable and truly wanted nothing more than to die on the steep and wooded slopes of LeConte…to become in death a part of the mountain. My mountain and I mourned on this day not too terribly long ago.

This trip was a trip of monumental triumph, of great joy. With each step on the trail and along the exposed cliffs I felt nothing but life, love and joy. I rejoiced as well as rested in the deep green of the forest coupled with the thin air that moved with vigor through the spruce fir forests near the summit of dear LeConte. All that I felt on this most liberating of days came from everywhere: God, the mountain, myself…I knew without a doubt that the person that wanted to die on the mountain the last time he was here had been replaced by a person that wants to live on the mountain…a person that wants to live period. That dear readers, is a miracle.

Learn of the green world what can be thy place.

I am so happy to that you are in a much better place. You want to know something strange? I have, during different periods, thought about wandering into the mountains without telling anyone and just laying down until I died there. Thankfully, I have never actually attempted it.

I love you.
