We stayed at a free campsite the other night right alongside the Nelson River in Greymouth and had SOOO much fun. We opened a bottle of wine and bought a variety pack of cheese (yes Mom, I ate cheese!) It was actually pretty darn delicious. In the morning we went to the Hokitika Gorge (picture) the water was unbelievable! It was a milky aquamarine color but once you were up close it was crystal clear. We settled ourselves onto the beach and various rocks to tan for the next couple hours—most definitely my kind of paradise.
Later in the afternoon we drove back to Greymouth to go beer tasting and get a tour of the Monteith’s Brewery. Oh my goodness their beer is phenomenal!! I even liked their ‘Black Beer’, which I totally did not think I would but I would say my favorite was either their ‘Summer Ale’ or the ‘Radler bier.’ At the tasting we met two guys from England and ended up going to dinner with them afterwards, which lead to us staying in the same hostel parking lot. Definitely one of the shadiest places I have ever been… We all played in the hostel pool tourney and I made it to the top 5 thank you very much. Vrooman- I think you kicking my ass all those times actually paid off!! We spent a good part of the night mingling with all the other hostel guests, who included honeymooners—note to my future husband, we will NOT be staying in a stinky hostel on our honeymoon.
Apparently Americans are known for our drinking games so that’s just what we did! Nathan and Phil came back to our campervan for a while and we played some Irish Poker and Categories. They introduced us to a few of their favorite dub step songs and showed us “skanking,” haha still not really sure how that dance is supposed to look?
This morning we woke up and hit the road to the Franz Josef Glacier apparently with the guys in tow… ended up going for a nice little 2 hour hike with them up to the glacier. It was pretty spectacular; there were waterfalls around every bend as we meandered through the valley. When we got to the end of our hike to the lookout I was surprised at how blue the ice really is. Afterwards our crew went their separate ways, us girls continued south towards Fox Glacier where we stopped for pizza. While there we drove out to Lake Matheson, unfortunately it was pretty cloudy and the lake that is normally known for its jaw-dropping reflections looked like any old lake you find in MN. We are now at our campsite for the night enjoying some country music, leftover pizza, and beer ☺ Tomorrow morning we will be in Wanaka and plan to spend the day on the beach and walking around the town.
