As a veteran high school teacher, I've learned to appreciate the ebb and flow of the school year. The excited wait before students turn in their first photos, and I find out who's got talent and who will have made the most improvement at the end of a semester. And at the other end of the spectrum, there's what happens at the end, when the seniors leave the building, when they walk out of the halls and into the rest of their adult lives.
The student above is one of those I will remember forever. She is and will be I think like me in that she will always be young even when she is my age, but there is something about this photograph, that shows the child she was when the entered high school, and the adult that leaves my program after making so much, and figuring so much out, with a camera, a brain and a voice.
