House Sparrows, Fake Sparrow and Sparrow hawk

by Adrian Morris September. 15, 2020 127 views

Male house sparrow. Less common than they were but still plenty about.

Female house sparrow.

This bird is quite common in gardens but few people notice it because it tends to skulk under bushes and it looks like the above house sparrow. In the past this bird was called a hedge sparrow but it is not a member of the sparrow family. It is, in fact a dunnock.

This is a sparrow hawk. As is implied in its name it frequently feeds on sparrows. It is quite common although we don't often have them in our garden. This one was after the birds on our bird feeders.

Something new for me. Never heard of sparrow hawk, always thought there was only one type of hawk.

Cool pictures, Adrian. I did not know anything about the sparrow hawk. Around the house I live are several sparrows, I always call them the "sparrow gang". Love to watch them.
