As I'm sure a lot of people can attest to this…the recession has absolutely sucked.
I started applications last Aug 2008 when I was still employed with a contract ending in Dec. After nearly a year of over 100 applications, some seriously bizarro interviews - I've finally been able to nail down a job again. Those are just numbers that seem daunting when it feels like nothing is happening.
So for those of you still looking…keep at it! Everyone has had to come up with some really creative ways to find employment and it will pay off.
If you can - volunteer for things you are truly interested in. Not only will you meet some really great people & hear some phenomenal stories, it will keep you out of trouble on most days. It is one incredible way to connect with people again. Not to mention you will also be able to answer the dreaded question of what you have been doing with yourself during your unemployment.
And here are a few chuckles from my interviews; although I cannot name the companies that these comments came from, I can say some of these were large international companies. Kinda amusing that way:
*One interviewer told right off the bat that the only reason he considered my CV was that his daughter wanted to move to Vancouver…If you're confused about this, don't worry, I don't get it either:P
*After a 2 and a half hour interview with 7 people, I was told I was over-qualified for a 6 month contract position…I'm not sure why it took so long & so many people to reach a consensus on this one
*While I was in the middle of answering a question, the interviewer said, “Yeah, yeah, let's move onto the next question…” Ummm…hello, where did your professionalism go?
*I was told that I was ineligible for a temp 2 month position b/c I needed one morning off for volunteering…then the person proceeded to interview me anyways. Question is why they bothered
These certainly gave me a good laugh as well as some really good stories to tell.
So for everyone still looking, don't despair.
And lots of love to the people that stuck this one out with me and didn't abandon me at any point:)
