A história de Montemor-o-Velho e do seu castelo remontam ao séc.IX, três séculos antes da fundação de Portugal. Situado na margem norte do rio Mondego, revestiu-se de grande importância estratégica ao longo dos séculos. O castelo e a Igreja de Santa Maria da Alcáçova estão classificados como monumento nacional desde 1910.
The history of Montemor-o-Velho and its cstle date back to the 9th century, three centuries before the foundation of Portugal. Located on the northern margin of the Mondego river, it had a great strategic importance over the years. The castle and the Church of Saint Mary of the “Alcáçova” have been classed as national monuments since 1910.
