Today was my final day in Michigan. Today was also the day I got to go to the zoo. What I had been looking forward to most of the week. We woke up and it was a beautiful day out, just at 70 degrees, the sun shining, and a slight breeze. So we grabbed Steve and called an Uber and headed to the zoo right at opening.
There was an event going on, but other than that, it was pretty quite and we could enjoy the animals in peace. Our favorite was probably getting to see the polar bear playing in the water. They had a tunnel in which we would walk through and watch her play.
The Detroit Zoo is known for being a "green" zoo. All of their silverware is make from corn, just as many recycling bins as trash bin, water bottle filling stations, no paper towels, and you had to buy a bag if you wanted on in the gift shop. Also they had a vegan food stand. So for lunch I got to eat a healthy meal instead of the normal fried cafeteria style food.
As we left the zoo we decided we should probably take a picture together. So here it is, our one selfie from the trip.
After we got back to the apartment, we still had a bit of time before I needed to head to the airport. So we decided to head downtown one more time. I purchased the plants I showed earlier (and yes they traveled all the way home on the plan and have survived and are growing).
Then we remembered it was Steve's birthday. We stopped and got a very delicious cupcake from a local shop. (I am not a huge fan of eating cupcakes, but I very much enjoyed this one.) We could not find any candles, so we had to make do with just a lighter. But it was fun to all be together for Steve's birthday.
We played one more game of Exploding Kittens. I am sad to report that I lost yet again. On the trip I went 0 of 4 with Hannah claiming all the victories. After our final game, it was time for me to head to the air port and back to South Dakota.
The sun was setting and it was a perfect way to end a long and exciting trip. Thank you Hannah for letting me hang out with you for the week. Can not wait to see what adventure we go on next summer. Steve says he wants to see more monkeys.
