an RSPB Avocet

It may have been the Great Crested grebe suffering under the onslaught of Victorian Hat feather hunters that prompted the formation of the RSPB, but this is not the symbol of that organisation. That accolade goes to the Avocet, and I heard that there were a few down at my local RSPB reserve at Rainham Marshes.

The tide was out when I arrived and as the birds were feeding at the waters edge that meant I was not going to get close, and in any case I didn't want to disturb them. So I waited till the sun was low on the water and went for a silhouette shot, which came out pleasingly well.
