Clearing The Way
a poem by CarolDesjarlais

looking through forest at her back door
for three years, suddenly, a light shone through
darkness that I allowed
to keep me captive to isolation

I realized arthritic hands
could not clear our way,
nor crippled feet
take stumbled chance

my hands blistered at trail-blazing
that became a flower-strewn trail
we know will always be there
should we take our loneliness for a walk

My wife caught me clearing a path in the field

"Tote dat barge!
Lif' dat bale!
Git a little drunk
An' you lands in jail.
Ah gits weary
An' sick of tryin'
Ah'm tired of livin'
An' skeered of dyin'!"
(Thanks Jerome and Oscar for "Old Man River")

Check you out with your machete. What wildlife do you encounter there? Congratulate your wife on her good shot.
