COME WITH ME IN A TOUR ACROSS OLD LISBON - VI (KING D. JOSÉ I STATUE'S DETAIL - EUROPE (FEATURED AS A HORSE) STEPS ON A DEFEATED WARRIOR)

by Antonio Gil April. 06, 2015 4438 views

King Dom José I equestrian statue results from the reconstruction of Lisbon, after the 1755 earthquake. The foundation for the statue's pedestal was built immediately, but the rest was only ordered in 1770, to the sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro. Carved in bronze, it was recently under restoration. Together, the pedestal and the statue reach 45 feet tall. One of the challenges that Machado de Castro had to face, was the refusal of the king to pose for the statue. The sculptor had to rely solely on portraits, emphasizing the feathery helmet to divert attentions from Dom José's face. The king was portraying looking at his right, lined with the horse direction, who is also raising its front right leg. Horseman and horse crush serpents while moving towards the Tagus River

I thought he looked a bit concerned about being trod on by a horse. Great in the bigger shot. Happy Easter Antonio.

The larger version really does your picture justice. Very dramatic. Excellent treatment.
