library,

one of my favorite places in town.

to sit and read, to relax and doze,

and to be alone in the crowd.

Hi! My son (13) was looking at photoblog and came across your Sri Lanka pictures and had all kinds of questions about this country he did not know. He started to scroll, and his eyes kept getting bigger and bigger. He found his way to these pictures of the library and he was agog! Thank you!

I'm so happy to know a 13 years old boy can find interest in such old things as a library. Perhaps he would like to know that at Mafra Palace Library,
(the one in the pictures) built in the 18th
century, small bats, about an inch long, act as guards against
book-eating insects. The bats, which are less than
inch long, roost during the day behind “elaborate rococo bookcases” and
come out at night to hunt insects which otherwise would feast on the
libraries’ books. The price of this natural insect control is paid in
scat: The bats leave a thin layer of droppings over
everything. So each morning the floors have to be thoroughly cleaned…and
the furniture has to be covered at night.
Thanks for your words my friend

Is that in Portugal? I just saw the name of the place at the bottom. In fact I've got my plane booked for April 2017 as Portugal is my current favourite holiday spot :)

fantastic shots of an almost mythical place. I love how old libraries are organized; books are usually put together by sizes and not alphabetically, as in modern libraries (although in the name of progress, that is the better system).

I've studied old german literature and have been in many old places like these in Germany and Switzerland - and it's always such a delight to be in the presence of these old volumes of honorable knowledge. it makes you realize the "value" of wisdom and knowledge in a very "literal" way: this is all extremely "rich" material. the words hidden behind these covers - negotiable. the material itself is the value exhibited here. :-)

Couldn't agree more. The only negative aspect here was they didn't allow me to enter. :-))

you're not worthy. probably been there all stubbly in jeans and tee, unwashed and without initiation into the elevated cycles of the beholders of the scripture... ;-)

The first, third and last are my picks from a interesting set. It looks an impressive building, a joy to go and spend a few hours in a comfy chair a good book and peace and quiet. Good set Antonio.

The only issue here it's that is not open to the public. I had to take these pictures from the door entrance.

@angil I had an idea when I saw your music links.

Do you know SoundCloud? I am thinking about allowing SoundCloud clips to be embedded in the post. What do you think of this idea?

Thanks
