History of Dance in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is well known for its different classical and folk dance forms, which come to life with the colourful costumes and rhythmic music. Looking back, the concept of Sri Lankan dance originated from the ancient times to the 4th Century BCE. The primary purpose of these dances of Sri Lanka was to expel natural disasters and sickness.

Later in the 15th Century CE, with the end of the Polonnaruwa era, the people of Sri Lanka were influenced by the dance forms of South Indian culture. This South Indian form of dancing later found its way into the folk dances of Sri Lanka. With time, the people of the country developed new dancing styles which were distinct and different from each other concerning a particular region.

Great set, Antonio! Did you get to observe a 'perahara' (they are like parades with elephants and similar dancers)?
Thanks for sharing with us.

There are two major Pereharas in SL. I was lucky to be there during one.https://www.photoblog.com/canon6d/2016/12/19/a-temple-parade-in-sri-lanka-part-2/

If your dancers were anything like the dancers on the video, then you were privy to a very nice show. Also the edits in #6 and #8 are very appealing to me.

You're so right 😎. The original pictures sucked (too noisy and dark)

It was rather dark inside and it was difficult to take good pictures, but these ones are just to show some of the culture of Sri Lanka. Thank you dear friend.
