down memory lane i ~ local Kelantan ale

I first came to know this locally manufactured bottled drink at about my primary schooling age (7-12 years old) back home in my ‘kampung’ or hometown. I can't remember when exactly, but this ‘sarsi’ ale together with ‘oren / orange’, ginger ale and ‘ais krim soda’ instantly became a must-have everyday. Those days it cost about 15 sen a bottle (roughly about 3 cents US then). Now it's selling at about RM1.90 to RM2.50 per bottle.

Sometimes back I was telling my children about this non alcoholic and non-gaseous drink, which then, was an equivalent to the present Coke and Pepsi, in terms of ‘likeness’ by many. However, those days not many can afford it.

This drink went out of my memory for quite sometimes, as I left my kampung for many many years travelling and being on tour of duty. One day at a fuelling station in KL I saw this drink again, on the shelves, chilled. It's a pleasant surprise for me. All are intact ~ the traditional light brown bottle, the bottle cap, and even its original brand of ‘Cap Ayam’ or "Cockerel Brand'. And, it's still manufactured back home too.

I bought a dozen for my children to try. And they all like the taste. Less carbonated, less sweet, less tangy. It could be too plain for Coke and Pepsi or even root beer lovers.

When I entered secondary school and was living away at the hostel, this drink became a ‘luxury item’ as I could only drink it once every two weeks, on outing day, Saturday. It's not on sale at the school canteen. By then also, there were already new cans on the block with many and much fancier names so much so that ‘Cap Ayam’ became ‘so local’ and not many among my friends would want to be seen drinking it.

And, upon living in metropolitan KL pursuing my degree, the memory of ‘Cap Ayam’ could have been totally erased from my mind and longing by other carbonated drinks and high end coffee.

Am glad that now, when talking about returning to my kampung for a holiday, there's this smooth, soothing drink (chilled of course) to help me track down memory lane.

Excellent! I always let my coke or root beer sit unopened for a day or so in order that they not be so fizzy. I bet I'd really like this drink.
