I hosted visits of friends from Indonesia

Before leaving for Japan, I had the opportunity to host a week-long visit of four friends from Indonesia. The editors of popular Indonesian press were guests of my agency.

They were delighted and amazed with what they saw and experienced. They were treated to 2-night homestay with Malaysians of Javanese origins in the state of Selangor and Negeri Sembilan apart from visits to tourists attractions in and around Kuala Lumpur and Melaka.

JogjaTV editor Bapak Andhi Wisnu contributing a Javanese song at a dinner function. He has a very good voice and a really talented singer. It was no surprise because his TV station is culture-based and resides at Indonesia culture seat, Yogyakarta.

Local families were involved in at least one village industry including production of potato chips for local markets. The government of Malaysia gives them full support and assistance including starting capital, equipment, training and even marketing of products.

My editor friends posing in front of badminton monument at the house of Malaysia's famous international badminton champions – the Sidek brothers of Misbun, Jailani, Razif and Rashid.

And now… what were they doing? They were enjoying ‘nasi ambeng’ traditional Javanese platter of rice in a big tray shared by four persons each. Malaysians still eat using bare hands (five fingers) while sitting cross legged on the floor for functions like thanksgiving prayer. It's not common now but still in practised during special ocassions..

This sounds like a wonderful experience for all involved, Mack. And there is nothing quite like a guest who provides music... I am always happy when someone visiting sits down to my piano... even better if they sing as well. 8^)
