Malaysians will be going to the polls on May 5 to elect a new government for a five-year mandate. It's the 13th General Elections since independence in Aug 1957.

Some quick facts;
* Some 13.3 million registered voters will be involved from the total population of some 27 million.
* Each voter will elect a member of parliament and a member of a state legislative seat for his/her respective area of residence.
* A total of 222 parliamentary seats and 505 state legislative seats are to be contested.
* A total of 1,900 candidates from various political parties and several independents will be vying for parliamentary seats
* and 1,321 candidates contesting for state legislative seats
* The present ruling Barisan Nasional (National Front), a coalition of 14 major political parties, which has been leading and developing multi-racial and multi-religious Malaysia for the past 50 years is said to be facing its toughest election ever this time around
* Prime Minister Najib Razak is confident that the widely accepted and much loved BN will be given it's biggest mandate ever to regain two third majority in parliament
* Some 40 percent of the total number of voters are youths with about 21 percent of them being first time voters

Wow… sorry, that's more than a mouthful for a quick fact.

here, all my wife's friends are in big, big discussions since weeks about the elections.. and of course, everyone is trying to promote rakyat, like most overseas malaysians apparently. they want change. they want the corruption to be tackled with, they want new perspectives for ALL malaysians, not just those who sit on the oil.

i will be in malaysia for the election and probably get the full load of the heated discussions there... looking forward to observing it! :-)
