One of the tips to capture birds in bird photography (or most nature shots) is to always focus on the eye, be it when you wish to compose the photo through a shallow depth of field for head shots or a larger aperture to capture their full body with their surroundings. Once I have the eyes in focus, I will then move my frame to compose the photo.
