Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary
Kuala Gandah, Pahang

The only one of its kind in Malaysia, Kuala Gandah Elephant Centre is a place where visitors can interact with elephants at close quarters.

The Department of Wildlife and National Parks established the Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre in 1989. The centre is a base for the Elephant Relocation Team, which began the elephant translocation programme in 1974. The team is dedicated to locating, subduing and then translocating elephants from areas where their habitats are underthreat from plantations.

Beside being the base for the translocation team and a home for a number of resident orphaned elephants, Kuala Gandah also aims to promote public awareness of the elephant??s plight in Malaysia. At the centre, visitors can ride elephants, help wash them in the nearby river and participate in feeding time.

At the moment Kuala Gandah houses a number of elephants that were brought from Thailand and Myanmar and have been trained as part of the translocation process for wild elephants in problem areas. The centre also looks after orphaned elephants to ensure their continued survival.
