Lock and Dam No. 12 on the Mississippi River is located in Bellevue Iowa. This particular lock and dam saw over 15 million tons of barge cargo pass through in 2015. The lock is not big enough to contain both the cargo and the barge. The entire process of watching the cargo and barge enter the lock and filling with water before passing was very interesting. The shear size of the operation is difficult to grasp. There happens to be a state park nearby that overlooks Bellevue and the Mississippi River. The birds-eye view helps you appreciate just how big the Mississippi River is! The black line on the left hand side of the final picture, running parallel to the road, is a train loaded with coal headed North through the town of Bellevue.
